Modelling surfactant-enhanced transport of PAH

چکیده
Within the framework of a comprehensive investigation concerning the use of surfactants to enhance the in-situ remediation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) contaminations in the subsurface, SMART (Streamtube Model for Advective and Reactive Transport), a multicomponent transport model, was developed to study the processes (interactions) taking place when surfactants and PAH migrate through porous media as solutes. The model is an adaption of a Lagrangian method allowing for separate treatment of conservative transport and reactive processes. It accounts for the hydraulic as well as for the physico-chemical heterogeneity of porous aquifers. The system of processes implemented in the model has been shown to be able to represent the behaviour of PAH and surfactants in porous media at the laboratory scale. Here, the transport model is applied to a simpli ed two-dimensional remediation scenario ( eld scale). It is shown how surfactants may in uence the clean-up of

Removal of PAHs with surfactant-enhanced soil washing: influencing factors and removal effectiveness.
PAH removal with surfactant enhanced washing was investigated through a series of laboratory tests to examine the effect of stirring speed, washing time, surfactant concentration, liquid/solid ratio, temperature, and on-and-off mode. The first four factors show significant influence on the PAH removal while the latter two do not. Total removal ratio and a new proposed parameter, solubilization ...

Bioremediation can be defined as any process that uses microorganisms or their enzymes to remove and or neutralize contaminants within the environment (i.e., within soil and water) to their original condition. Bioremediation can be employed to remediate specific types of contaminants such as; petroleum hydrocarbons, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH), polychlorinated biphenyl’s (PCB), chlor...

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination of the environment represents a serious threat to the health of humans and ecosystems. Given the human health effects of PAHs, effective and cost-competitive remediation technologies are required. Bioremediation has shown promise as a potentially effective and low-cost treatment option, but concerns about the slow process rate and bioavailabil...
متن کاملSurfactant-enhanced electrokinetic remediation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in heterogeneous subsurface environments
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) contamination exists at numerous sites and poses a substantial risk to public health and the environment. Electrokinetic remediation technology has the potential to treat PAH-contaminated soils, but the effect of soil heterogeneities such as layers, lenses, and mixtures of different soils on the electrokinetic process has not been adequately studied. This s...
